In a keynote address at the North American Marine Environment Protection (NAMEPA) Awards, ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki emphasized the importance of decisive leadership in navigating this complex landscape. He noted that the industry must adapt to the accelerating pace of change and rising stakes, making clear, safety-first leadership essential.

Wiernicki outlined a strategic approach for leaders, which starts with a relentless focus on performance across all areas, from vessel efficiency to decision-making. He urged leaders to adopt transformational technologies that align with their specific risk profiles, viewing these technologies not merely as tools but as vital enablers of competitive advantage. He identified five key technologies—artificial intelligence, nuclear energy, green hydrogen, carbon capture, and battery storage—that will shape the future of the maritime sector.
