Dr. Rosalie Balkin Wins International Maritime Prize for Advancing Maritime Law

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council has awarded Dr. Rosalie Balkin the 2024 International Maritime Prize, recognizing her significant contributions to international maritime law over her 50-year career. Currently serving as Secretary-General of the Comité Maritime International (CMI), the oldest organization dedicated to unifying maritime law, Dr. Balkin is the first woman to hold this position in its 128-year history.

Nominated by the Australian Government, Dr. Balkin has previously held notable roles, including Director of Legal Affairs at the IMO and Assistant Secretary-General. The Australian Government commended her dedication and achievements in the maritime community, affirming her deserving status for this prestigious honor.

Under her leadership, the IMO adopted several key international conventions, including those addressing maritime safety and pollution liability. Dr. Balkin has also contributed extensively to legal and academic institutions worldwide as an author and lecturer, serving on the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University and as a legal advisor to the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds.

Dr. Balkin’s commitment to maritime law has been recognized with numerous honors, including being appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia. She will receive the International Maritime Prize at a ceremony in November 2025.
