Dutch maritime solar company Wattlab has successfully installed a solar energy system on Vertom’s multipurpose cargo vessel, the Vertom Tula, marking a significant advancement in sustainable shipping. The 7,280dwt diesel-electric vessel now features 44 Solar Flatracks, which will reduce onboard hotel load by 20%, contributing to greener maritime operations.

Wattlab’s production of the Solar Flatracks took place in Rotterdam, with installation completed in just one day at the Port of Harlingen. Bo Salet, co-founder and CEO of Wattlab, emphasized the efficiency of the installation process, noting that the twist lock fittings allow for quick setup. The system’s design also enables easy removal and storage of the panels, optimizing space and time for shipowners.

Thomas van Meerkerk, Business Development Manager at Vertom, highlighted the positive performance of the Solar Flatracks in challenging coastal environments. Research indicates that the system effectively reduces greenhouse gas emissions while offering a favorable return on investment. Additionally, the panels can remain on hatch covers during cargo operations, dispelling initial crew concerns about added workload due to their minimal maintenance requirements.
