First Offshore Gas Platform Powered by Wind Energy in Dutch North Sea

First Wind-Powered Offshore Gas Platform Loaded Out In
The N05-A platform in the Dutch North Sea is a groundbreaking project powered by wind energy from the Riffgat offshore wind farm. Mammoet supported the installation of the platform, utilizing mobile cranes, trailers, and SPMTs. The project aims to reduce carbon emissions by over 85% and is a significant step towards sustainable offshore energy production.

The N05-A platform in the Dutch North Sea is the first offshore gas platform to be powered entirely by wind energy, utilizing electricity from the nearby Riffgat offshore wind farm. The platform is part of the GEMS project, aiming to develop field N05-A and other fields in the area, with expectations to reduce carbon emissions by over 85%. Mammoet supported the load-out of the 3,050t N05-A topside and 3,150t jacket at HSM’s facility in Rotterdam, with ONE-Dyas managing offshore sailing and installation.

Mammoet used mobile cranes, trailers, and SPMTs for the assembly and weighing of the jacket and topside. The jacket was fabricated and assembled in two parts, with Mammoet providing heavy transport and upending support using mobile cranes. SPMTs were used to move the topside to the quayside, where Mammoet assisted in the installation of a pedestal crane.

The load-out operation of the jacket and topside was a significant challenge due to the need to load both structures onto the same vessel to shorten the schedule. Mammoet used a small spud leg barge to secure the vessel during the operation. The load-out was completed in just two days using four trains of 32-axle line SPMT trailers. Mammoet also prepared a temporary load-in venue in case of delays in the execution date, showcasing their ability to adapt to changing operational environments.
