Seaspan Shipyards is enhancing its shipbuilding processes by awarding a $1.5 million contract to Alberta’s Confined Space Robotics (CSR) for the development of semiautonomous robotic systems focused on blast and paint operations. These critical processes, especially in submarine construction, involve working in confined spaces and handling hazardous materials, which pose significant safety challenges.

CSR will create collaborative robotic systems equipped with various tools such as needle scalers, laser ablation systems, and spray-coating applicators. These robots will be mounted on mobile platforms and guided by custom path-planning software to streamline operations. By automating these repetitive and physically demanding tasks, Seaspan aims to reduce worker exposure to toxic substances and alleviate long-term ergonomic strain.

In addition to enhancing safety and productivity, the initiative aligns with environmental goals. The advanced software will optimize material usage, minimizing overspray and waste, thereby reducing the environmental impact of coating operations. This investment is part of Seaspan’s commitment to Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, which focuses on strengthening domestic supply chains and fostering Canadian innovation.
