Arctic Gateway Group (AGG) has teamed up with Canadian shipping firm Fednav to assess the operational needs for year-round shipping from the Port of Churchill. This review is currently underway and is expected to be completed by summer. The collaboration aims to analyze the practical challenges of navigating ice-covered waters in Hudson Bay, which will inform AGG’s long-term business strategy.

The study will focus on existing ice conditions, shipping patterns, and the necessary investments to support extended shipping seasons. Importantly, this initiative does not bypass environmental assessments, regulatory processes, or Indigenous decision-making. Any future plans for year-round shipping or icebreaking will involve significant engagement with Indigenous communities, governments, and environmental stakeholders.

Chris Avery, AGG’s President & CEO, emphasized the need for operational understanding to support business growth at the Port of Churchill while recognizing that future developments will require extensive consultations and regulatory reviews.

This initiative aligns with broader research and planning efforts in Western Hudson Bay, including studies on shipping routes and environmental considerations led by the Arctic Research Foundation and Parks Canada. Fednav will leverage its extensive Arctic experience to evaluate historical ice conditions and navigation challenges specific to the region.
