Following the recent accident, South Port undertook a comprehensive review of its operational systems, implementing several key changes. These modifications include the introduction of regular assessments to evaluate navigation competency, updates to operating procedures and passage plans, as well as refresher training focused on electronic navigation.
The commission believes that these proactive measures effectively address the safety concerns highlighted during its inquiry. By enhancing training and operational protocols, South Port aims to mitigate risks associated with maritime navigation.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has noted that the lessons learned from the grounding incident at Bluff are pertinent for all operators of small, fast vessels navigating confined waters. Operating at high speeds near the shore, especially in conditions of variable visibility, significantly reduces the margin for error.
To improve safety, TAIC emphasizes the importance of integrating electronic navigation with traditional visual methods and regularly assessing crew proficiency. This approach not only aids in recognizing potential issues but also allows crews more time to take corrective actions before situations escalate into accidents.
