The National Bureau of Investigation of Finland (NBI) has concluded its inquiry into the cable damage in the Gulf of Finland on December 25, 2024. Senior officers of the tanker Eagle S are now suspected of aggravated criminal mischief and serious interference with telecommunications.

The investigation centered on the Eagle S, a Cook Islands-flagged vessel, which was in the vicinity during the incident. Evidence collected from the ship, seabed analysis, and crew interviews have led authorities to form a clear timeline of events surrounding the cable damage.

Among the suspects are the master, chief mate, and second mate, who were responsible for the vessel’s navigation and operation. Detective Chief Inspector Sami Liimatainen emphasized the investigation’s focus on their accountability regarding the vessel’s condition and their awareness of the anchor’s deployment.

The investigation involved collaboration with both national and international agencies and has now been forwarded to the Office of the Prosecutor General for potential charges.
