A fire broke out on Wednesday aboard the Maersk containership Marie Maersk while it was sailing off the coast of Liberia. The 2013-built vessel, part of the Gemini Cooperation’s Asia–Europe AE4 service, was en route from Rotterdam to Tanjung Pelepas when crew members noticed smoke emanating from containers on deck.

The crew promptly activated the ship’s firefighting systems and followed emergency protocols. Maersk confirmed that all crew members are safe and that the ship remains stable, with its propulsion, steering, and navigational systems unaffected. The vessel has since diverted toward the West African coast to seek landside support, and tugs have been dispatched to assist.

In a statement, Maersk emphasized their ongoing communication with the crew and commitment to providing support. However, they could not yet assess the fire’s impact on the cargo. Fortunately, no explosions or secondary incidents have been reported, and monitoring of the situation continues as it develops.
