Zodiac Maritime, based in London, has initiated an emergency response following a fire on its 4,902 ceu car carrier, Morning Midas. The incident occurred around midnight on June 3 in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 1,900 km from Anchorage, while the vessel was en route to Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico. Fortunately, all 22 crew members are safe and accounted for.
The Morning Midas, built in 2006, was transporting around 3,000 vehicles, including 800 electric ones. Smoke was first detected on a deck designated for electric vehicles. The crew promptly activated the vessel’s onboard fire suppression systems, but they were unable to control the blaze.
In coordination with the United States Coast Guard, the crew was safely evacuated via lifeboat and transferred to a nearby merchant vessel. Relevant authorities have been informed, and a tugboat has been dispatched to assist with salvage and firefighting efforts.
The Morning Midas is co-owned by Zodiac Maritime and Hawthorn Navigation, with Zodiac serving as its manager, according to the Equasis database.
