Babcock International Group’s LGE division, a leader in liquefied gas solutions, has achieved a significant milestone with its ecoCO2® cargo handling system. The first of four 22,000m³ liquefied CO₂ (LCO₂) carriers has successfully completed its maiden gas trial, marking a crucial step in the vessel’s commissioning process. This trial is notable as it represents the first operational test of the ecoCO2® system aboard a commercial vessel, confirming its effectiveness in managing and reliquefying low-pressure CO₂ cargo.

The ecoCO2® system, which received Approval in Principle from Lloyd’s Register at Gastech 2023, is designed to facilitate the entire Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) value chain. It is versatile enough to transport refrigerated liquid CO₂, LPG, and ammonia. Neale Campbell, Managing Director of Babcock’s LGE business, emphasized that the successful gas trial showcases the operational readiness and adaptability of the ecoCO2® technology.

Set to be the largest LCO₂ carrier on the market, the vessel is scheduled for delivery in January 2026. The completion of this trial not only sets the stage for commercial operations but also promotes the broader adoption of ecoCO2® technology within the industry, contributing to global decarbonization efforts.
