The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first container shipping line to operate a fleet of 1,000 vessels. This achievement was confirmed by Linerlytica following the delivery of the MSC Migsan from a Chinese shipyard. For the first time in the 56-year history of organized container shipping, MSC’s operational fleet has reached four digits.
Simultaneously, MSC’s founder Gianluigi Aponte announced the transfer of ownership to his children, Diego and Alexa, marking a significant generational shift. Diego, who has been President and CEO since 2014, will continue to steer the company’s direction, as MSC solidifies its place among the world’s largest private family businesses.
MSC’s fleet, totaling 7.3 million TEU, is now 57% larger than its closest competitor, Maersk. Since 2020, MSC acquired 444 ships, reflecting a historic scale of growth in the container shipping sector. The company’s influence is profound in regions like India, where it supports significant port operations and is poised for further expansion with a substantial order book.
The transfer of ownership underscores the Aponte family’s entrepreneurial legacy, transforming MSC from a small Mediterranean carrier into a global shipping giant, surpassing Maersk’s long-standing dominance.
