Maritime traffic in Türkiye’s Canakkale Strait was halted in both directions early Sunday due to heavy fog, causing a significant reduction in visibility. The Canakkale Strait Vessel Traffic Services suspended all transit shipping from northbound and southbound directions at 8:00 a.m. Officials stated that traffic would resume once the weather conditions improve, emphasizing the safety of maritime operations in the area.
While the fog did not impact local ferry operations and island lines, the Canakkale-Eceabat and Canakkale-Kilitbahir ferry routes were temporarily suspended from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. due to the Saucony Troya Half Marathon taking place in the city. Despite the temporary disruptions, ferry services were adjusted to accommodate the event, ensuring minimal disruption to scheduled operations.
Ferry adjustments were made to accommodate the temporary suspension, with final sailings before the halt scheduled for 9:00 a.m. from Kilitbahir to Canakkale and 8:45 a.m. from Eceabat to Canakkale. Services were set to resume from Eceabat at 13:00 and from Kilitbahir at 1:15 p.m., with departures from Canakkale to both destinations restarting at 1:45 p.m. Maritime authorities indicated that the strait would be reopened to ship traffic once visibility improved, prioritizing the safety and efficiency of maritime transportation in the region.
