In light of escalating tensions following recent Israeli attacks on Iran, Turkiye has enhanced security measures for its maritime interests. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that, effective June 17, 2025, the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code level for Turkish-flagged vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and at Iranian ports will be raised to Level 3, the highest security tier. This decision responds to increasing maritime threats in the strategically crucial waterway.

Uraloğlu emphasized that this heightened security level aims to prepare Turkish ships against potential threats. Under Level 3, enhanced security measures will be enforced, including possible temporary suspension of loading and unloading operations, intensive inspections of provisions, and restricted access to vessels. Only authorized personnel will be permitted onboard, and crew members will receive specific instructions.

Additionally, captains will have the authority to expand restricted zones around their ships in response to perceived threats. Both electronic and physical security measures will be intensified, requiring vessels to maintain continuous surveillance and illumination. The decision reflects Turkiye’s commitment to ensuring maritime safety amid growing regional instability, particularly in the vital Strait of Hormuz.
