The FuelEU initiative will not apply to Norway and Iceland, as they are EEA members but not EU Member States. This means that 50% of energy used on voyages between these countries and EU Member States will be subject to FuelEU regulations from January 1, 2025. However, voyages within Norwegian or Icelandic waters, between Norway and Iceland, and to other third countries will not be covered by FuelEU. For more information, interested parties can refer to the DG MOVE FuelEU pages and the Norwegian Maritime Authority announcement.
The exact date for when FuelEU will apply in Norway and Iceland is still pending confirmation. FuelEU Maritime also allows for exemptions for specific routes and ports used by passenger ships, particularly those operating between ports located on islands with fewer than 200,000 inhabitants within a Member State. Denmark, Greece, Italy, and Malta have agreed to exemptions for certain ports, islands, and passenger ships in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2023/1805.
It is important to note that FuelEU Maritime exemptions will not be applicable beyond December 31, 2029. This initiative aims to decarbonize maritime transport and reduce emissions within the European Union.
