HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Engine & Machinery (HHI-EMD) has confirmed the stable operation of its HiMSEN engine on ethanol fuel. Testing was conducted on the 4-stroke methanol dual-fuel engine platform (H32DF-LM), demonstrating reliable performance across all load points.

The tests evaluated key factors such as startability, combustion stability, power output consistency, and exhaust gas characteristics while largely retaining existing methanol engine hardware. This approach underscores HHI-EMD’s commitment to innovation in fuel technology.

Ethanol, similar to methanol, is a liquid at atmospheric conditions and can be sourced from bio-based materials, making it an attractive alternative fuel. Its potential for significant carbon reduction is noteworthy, prompting increased interest from shipowners and the shipbuilding sector.
