Germany’s maritime sector is on the brink of significant growth, but industry leaders stress the need for clearer political priorities and robust policy support. During a press conference in Hamburg, the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association (VSM) and IG Metall Küste called for a decisive national action plan to bolster shipbuilding and marine technology. Reinhard Lüken, VSM’s managing director, emphasized the strategic importance of these industries for Germany and Europe, particularly in light of the European Commission’s new maritime strategy.

Lüken noted that the strategy’s success hinges on EU member states implementing concrete actions. Germany must transform the policy framework into practical measures that enhance the maritime value chain. Rising demand in various maritime sectors, driven by security needs and the global energy transition, presents opportunities, but structural challenges could hinder progress.

IG Metall Küste raised concerns about workforce issues, highlighting a shortage of skilled labor as a critical challenge. District head Daniel Friedrich pointed out that while German shipyards are expanding, collaboration among shipyards and suppliers is essential. Attracting younger workers, especially women, is crucial for maintaining competitiveness.

Both organizations warned of shifting geopolitical dynamics and urged Europe to strengthen its industrial base. They anticipate that the upcoming National Maritime Conference in Emden will yield concrete policy measures to support the sector’s strategic role in security, energy supply, and climate protection.
