Lloyd’s Register (LR) has partnered with COSCO Shipping Group, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the University of Southampton to establish the International Maritime Future Technologies Innovation Centre. This virtual center aims to propel research and development in zero-carbon maritime technologies, intelligent ship systems, and digital innovations. By serving as a global collaboration platform, the center focuses on translating research into practical, scalable solutions that can be implemented across global fleets.
The initiative, led by COSCO Shipping Group, will leverage the unique expertise of each partner in areas such as technical standards, alternative fuels, vessel performance, and intelligent navigation. Utilizing COSCO Shipping’s operational data and fleet network, the center aims to test and validate new technologies that can provide effective decarbonization solutions in real-world scenarios.
To ensure ongoing innovation and alignment with the maritime industry’s evolving needs, the founding partners have established a Technical Committee. Prior to this center’s inception, LR collaborated with the Shanghai Shipping and Science Research Institute and Shanghai Jiao Tong University to develop a techno-economic model focused on fleet energy transition.
Nick Brown, CEO of LR, emphasized the partnership’s goal of transforming ambition into actionable solutions for the maritime sector. Professor Fraser Sturt from the University of Southampton echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of global collaboration in addressing the industry’s decarbonization challenges.
