The International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF), in collaboration with the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, has initiated the first Global Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) Systems Review. This comprehensive assessment aims to evaluate and enhance maritime SAR systems globally.

The review will analyze the effectiveness of SAR capabilities at various levels—local, national, and international. It seeks to identify emerging risks and critical gaps, providing evidence-based recommendations to ensure resilience in an increasingly complex maritime landscape. Key challenges, such as climate change, geopolitical instability, and economic pressures, will also be examined.

Moreover, the initiative aims to address regional disparities in SAR capacity and will involve a diverse range of stakeholders. Participants will include local and national SAR organizations, government bodies, commercial shipping operators, artisanal fishing communities, academics, industry suppliers, and technological innovators.

By engaging with these experts, the IMRF and Lloyd’s Register Foundation aspire to shape the future of maritime SAR systems for the next 10 to 20 years, ensuring they remain effective and responsive to evolving global challenges.
