Heads of seven shipping associations, including Danish Shipping, are urging the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to adopt its Net-Zero Framework (NZF) during a crucial vote in October. They emphasize that failing to do so would hinder the green transition and lead to a confusing array of regional climate regulations. The 176 IMO member states will meet in London to finalize a historic agreement on binding climate regulations for the shipping industry, initially agreed upon in April.
The NZF aims to establish concrete mandates for emissions reduction and introduce a pricing mechanism to incentivize compliance and the use of greener fuels. This framework is essential for achieving climate-neutral shipping by 2050 and creating a level playing field for the global industry. Anne H. Steffensen, CEO of Danish Shipping, stated that the alternative to the NZF is not a lack of regulation but rather a fragmented approach that could undermine global efforts.
The associations also call on the European Union to align its ambitious climate regulations with the NZF to prevent double payments for emissions and reduce regulatory burdens. The adoption of the NZF is seen as a pivotal step toward sustainable shipping and a clear signal to investors to increase production of alternative fuels necessary for achieving zero emissions.
