Ahti Climate, which offers FuelEU Maritime pooling services, has received additional funding from Business Finland to enhance its Ahti Pool platform and boost research and development (R&D). This follows an initial grant in September 2024 aimed at accelerating platform development. The new funding is expected to strengthen Ahti’s growth strategy, product differentiation, and commercial prospects in the maritime emissions compliance sector.
The FuelEU Maritime regulation, effective January 1, 2025, aims to increase the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels in EU maritime transport. This regulation imposes higher costs on companies relying on traditional fossil fuels, encouraging a transition to cleaner alternatives. Ahti Pool provides a compliant pooling model that allows shipping operators to utilize and trade ultra-low-carbon fuels like e-methanol and bio-LNG. Members can buy and sell credits for sustainable fuel usage, leading to reduced CO2 emissions and operational flexibility.
Lari Rajantie, Chief Funding Advisor at Business Finland, emphasized the commitment to supporting innovative solutions that address global challenges. Ahti Pool is recognized for its potential to facilitate compliance with FuelEU Maritime regulations while delivering commercial benefits. CEO Risto-Juhani Kariranta noted that the funding acknowledges the platform’s technological maturity and its ability to meet rising demand from shipowners in EU waters.
