The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has significantly impacted international shipping, particularly following an attack by Houthi rebels from Yemen on the Dutch-flagged cargo ship Minervagracht in the Gulf of Aden. This incident, which set the vessel ablaze and left it adrift, underscores the increasing threat from the Iranian-backed group amid rising regional tensions.

This attack marks the most notable action by the Houthis in recent months and coincides with a new Israeli ground offensive in Gaza. Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree asserted that the assault was a response to alleged violations by the Amsterdam-based Spliethoff shipping company, raising concerns about potential disruptions to maritime navigation in the area.

The incident has elicited widespread condemnation, prompting the Netherlands to pledge to seek EU sanctions against the Houthis. The situation in the Middle East remains precarious, as the rebels have also targeted several American oil companies, including Chevron and Exxon Mobil, threatening further assaults and complicating the global geopolitical landscape.
