ABS has granted approval in principle (AIP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its innovative HyfloWind Float, a hybrid floating offshore wind structure aimed at boosting production efficiency and simplifying deployment.
The HyfloWind Float utilizes a concrete-based steel composite design, moving away from traditional all-steel constructions. This method allows for local fabrication in areas lacking robust steel manufacturing, thereby reducing costs associated with steel imports. The combination of a steel frame and concrete also contributes to a lighter overall structure.
Ahn Young-Kyu, Vice President of Samsung Heavy Industries, emphasized that this hybrid solution is designed for customers focused on local content. He noted that, alongside existing steel models, SHI is developing a flexible supply system to support the global expansion of offshore wind energy, particularly in key Asian markets.
This strategic approach aims to enhance sustainability and cost-effectiveness in offshore wind projects, aligning with the growing demand for renewable energy solutions.
