The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established a Regional Presence Office (RPO) for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in Alexandria, Egypt. This office will focus on coordinating technical assistance in maritime safety, security, and environmental sustainability for countries in the region. The launch event was attended by high-level dignitaries, including IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez and His Excellency Lieutenant General Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development representing the Government of Egypt.
Secretary-General Dominguez emphasized the importance of the RPO in addressing regional maritime challenges and representing the voices and needs of MENA countries on a global platform. The office will play a crucial role in implementing IMO’s technical cooperation activities in the region, with a specific focus on enhancing maritime safety, security, and environmental sustainability. It will also serve as a hub for monitoring progress, facilitating dialogue, and delivering tailored solutions to address the region’s unique maritime needs.
The MENA region is strategically significant in global maritime trade, hosting critical routes like the Suez Canal, which accounts for approximately 12% of global trade. The establishment of the RPO is expected to strengthen the region’s capacity in maritime governance and promote the transition to greener shipping practices. The launch event was attended by representatives from Member States, industry stakeholders, and academia, highlighting the shared vision of sustainable and secure maritime trade as a key driver of global prosperity.
