Dr. Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), emphasized the potential impact of the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA) Act, currently awaiting presidential assent. He stated that once signed into law, NPERA will significantly enhance the maritime industry by establishing necessary regulatory frameworks. Akutah expressed optimism that within five years, the agency will solidify its operations, leading to a revitalized port sector and increased job creation through automation.
During an award presentation by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abuja, Akutah praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, which aims to bolster the port sector’s economic contributions. He also acknowledged the support from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, in revitalizing the sector through effective regulations.
Akutah highlighted a critical challenge facing the NSC: the need for a robust legal framework to empower the agency in regulating the port economy. He noted that the NPERA Bill has passed both chambers of the National Assembly and is awaiting presidential approval. Once enacted, it is expected to attract foreign direct investment and drive growth in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
