The Industry Associations of BIMCO, ICS, IMCA, INTERCARGO, INTERTANKO, and OCIMF have collaborated to release a consolidated publication called Best Management Practices (BMP) for Maritime Security (MS). This publication aims to provide actionable insights and advice for threat and risk management in the maritime industry. Supported by over forty maritime stakeholders, BMP Maritime Security consolidates previously published regional publications into a comprehensive guide that directs users to the most up-to-date security intelligence and risk assessment information.
Seafarers operating ships worldwide face various maritime security threats, including aggressive state and non-state actors. These threats can have a significant impact on seafarers’ physical and mental well-being, with some being held as hostages and subjected to violence and ill-treatment. While existing BMP guidance has improved the industry’s ability to understand and deter security threats, the rapidly evolving threat environment requires continuous updates to the advice provided.
BMP Maritime Security offers users the ability to navigate different sections and access external sources for additional information. The publication includes diagrams that enhance learning opportunities and a section detailing global authorities and contacts for seafarer welfare support. By providing a comprehensive guide to maritime security, the Industry Associations aim to enhance the industry’s preparedness and response to security threats faced by seafarers.
