Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat company supported by Maritime London, has introduced SEA-CARE, a new industry working group focused on enhancing maritime safety through collaboration. Comprised of industry stakeholders, regulators, and the UK government, the group is facilitated by Maritime London to ensure proper representation in discussions between Inmarsat and stakeholders. Led by Jos Standerwick and Peter Broadhurst, SEA-CARE aims to leverage data sharing to gain a better understanding of maritime security challenges and how to address them.

Inspired by Inmarsat Maritime’s annual report “The Future of Maritime Safety,” which analyzes call recordings from the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), SEA-CARE aims to use this data to drive insights into best safety practices. By combining this information with other data sets, the group believes they can make significant strides in improving safety measures within the industry. Peter Broadhurst emphasized the need to enrich GMDSS data with additional information to help reduce unnecessary emergency calls and enhance preventative measures.

Recognizing concerns around sharing sensitive data, SEA-CARE members agreed to use anonymized information retrospectively to achieve the initiative’s objectives. The committee plans to convene again in early 2025 to identify the top security issues facing the industry and determine which organizations to approach for data disclosure. Stakeholders have demonstrated readiness to embrace the challenge of sharing the right data to provide a more comprehensive and objective view of maritime safety, reflecting a commitment to collective efforts in enhancing industry-wide safety measures.
