Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat company, has partnered with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) to transition its fleet from Fleet Xpress (FX) to Inmarsat’s NexusWave service. This upgrade aims to enhance MOL’s digitalization strategy by providing a fully managed bonded connectivity service for its vessels, including LNG carriers and oil tankers. Local partner JSAT MOBILE Communications will oversee the implementation and support of these upgrades.
MOL seeks robust satellite communication solutions to transform its ships into connected floating offices and homes. NexusWave combines multiple network underlays to deliver high speeds, reliability, unlimited data, and global coverage. It also includes enterprise-grade cybersecurity, 24/7 technical support, and transparent costs, ensuring peace of mind for users.
Junichi Yoshiyama, MOL’s Chief Digital & Information Officer, emphasized the importance of NexusWave in maintaining high-speed internet connectivity for their digitalized ships. Ben Palmer, President of Inmarsat Maritime, highlighted the partnership’s focus on enhancing maritime digitalization and the benefits of working with a reliable connectivity provider.
Recent tests of NexusWave reported download speeds of 330–340 Mbps and upload speeds of 70–80 Mbps, with network availability exceeding 99.9%. Future enhancements will integrate the ViaSat-3 Ka-band network, further boosting connectivity speeds.
