Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) recently completed a biodiesel-blended marine fuel bunkering operation on its capsize bulk carrier, Midnight Dream. The vessel was supplied with approximately 1,000 tons of biofuel in Singapore in March 2025, marking MOL’s first use of biofuel in collaboration with BHP Group on a capesize bulk carrier. Biofuel is derived from organic resources of biological origin, such as agricultural residues and waste cooking oil.
The biofuel utilized in this operation is a blend of about 24% biodiesel (B24) with Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), resulting in an expected reduction of approximately 750 tons of CO₂ emissions. Biofuel serves as a viable alternative to fossil fuels, offering lower carbon emissions. Its compatibility with existing marine diesel engines and bunkering facilities allows for a seamless transition without the need for modifications.
By embracing biofuel as a marine fuel option, MOL is taking a proactive step towards reducing its environmental impact. This move aligns with the industry’s efforts to adopt more sustainable practices and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The successful biofuel bunkering on the Midnight Dream demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of using biofuels in maritime operations, paving the way for further adoption of eco-friendly fuel alternatives in the shipping industry.
