Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to Rondal for its innovative Aero Wing Sail, following a thorough concept-level assessment aligned with LR’s Guidance Notes on Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (2025). The presentation of the AiP took place at Metstrade 2025 in Amsterdam, marking a significant milestone for the project.
The Aero Wing Sail is a rigid wing-sail designed for large yachts and multihulls, aimed at enhancing wind-assisted propulsion while allowing seamless integration into vessel designs. This advancement represents a notable step forward in sustainable marine technology.
LR’s evaluation confirmed that the Aero Wing Sail concept meets essential safety, structural, mechanical, and aerodynamic standards. The review process included Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, structural design assessments, and mechanical system evaluations to identify potential operational and integration risks.
Additionally, LR offered recommendations for further refinement of the concept, ensuring that Rondal can enhance the design and functionality of the Aero Wing Sail as it progresses toward implementation. This collaboration underscores the commitment to advancing wind-assisted propulsion technologies in the maritime industry.
