This ideal encapsulates this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) theme, “Give to Gain,” which is observed annually on March 8. Since its inception in 1911, IWD has highlighted women’s achievements, raised awareness about discrimination, and advocated for gender equality. Its strength lies in its inclusivity, where every supportive action, regardless of size, contributes to advancing equality.
The “Give to Gain” theme underscores the importance of reciprocity and support. By empowering women through mentorship, advocacy, and resources, we create opportunities not just for individuals but for entire communities. When women succeed, everyone benefits. Individuals can promote gender equality in their daily lives by challenging stereotypes, celebrating women’s successes, and advocating for equal pay. Organizations can enhance their contributions by providing resources, training, and safe work environments.
In the maritime sector, the International Day for Women in Maritime, celebrated on May 18, aims to boost women’s recruitment and retention, aligning with the IMO’s commitment to gender equality. Despite advancements on land, women still represent only 1% of the global seafaring workforce, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced diversity and inclusion efforts. Initiatives like the Maritime Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Innovation Lab and tailored PPE for female seafarers are steps toward addressing these disparities.
International Women’s Day serves as a reminder that achieving gender equality requires collective action. Every supportive gesture—be it through advocacy, mentorship, or resources—can drive meaningful change.
