Maritime Leader Recognized for Advancing Gender Equality
Karin Orsel, a Dutch shipowner and entrepreneur, received the International Maritime Organization’s Gender Equality Award on May 16, presented by Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez. This annual award honors individuals who significantly contribute to promoting gender equality in the maritime sector. At the award ceremony in London, coinciding with the International Day for Women in Maritime, Orsel emphasized the importance of mentorship and support networks for women entering the industry.
Starting her career in shipping at 18, Orsel co-founded MF Shipping Group by age 23. Under her leadership as CEO for over 20 years, the company has grown from six vessels to over 55, employing more than 1,000 crew members and 80 office staff. Orsel has prioritized creating an inclusive workplace by recruiting diverse talent and supporting initiatives to enhance women’s access to maritime careers.
She believes the industry’s push toward decarbonization presents new opportunities for women, as the transition to net-zero emissions by 2050 will require innovative skills and technologies. Dominguez praised Orsel as a role model, stating she is transforming the maritime sector and paving the way for future generations.
