Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for its innovative LNG carrier design. This next-generation vessel features a forward accommodation layout and an integrated Wind Challenger, a wind-assisted propulsion system developed in collaboration with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL).

The design moves the accommodation and bridge from the traditional aft position to the bow, reducing aerodynamic drag and enhancing propulsion efficiency. This configuration also allows for greater flexibility in the arrangement of wind-assisted technologies, including MOL’s Wind Challenger, by creating an unobstructed open deck space above the cargo area.

Additionally, the design is future-proof, supporting the integration of alternative fuel modules and battery storage to meet evolving regulations and owner demands. The AiP was awarded following LR’s thorough technical assessment of the design’s safety, feasibility, and compliance with regulatory standards, including a comprehensive review of IMO requirements and industry guidelines.
