The International Maritime Pilots’ Association (IMPA) has launched the IMPA Foundation to tackle the maritime industry’s workforce challenges, particularly the shortage of mariners and officers. Captain Simon Pelletier, chairperson of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, emphasizes the urgency of this issue, asserting that the global community of maritime pilots is dedicated to fostering careers in the sector.

The London-based foundation aims to bridge the skills gap by funding educational initiatives and attracting a diverse, young talent pool into maritime careers. Its mission focuses on creating a resilient workforce that can adapt to technological advancements while upholding high standards of safety and environmental responsibility.

In addition to financial support, the Foundation will provide mentoring and practical guidance to help emerging maritime professionals thrive in a rapidly changing industry. Key trustees, including Guy Platten and Ambassador Nancy Karigithu, highlight the transformative role of education in nurturing the next generation of maritime leaders.

Eliane Blanch, IMPA’s Sustainability and Relationships Director, will oversee the Foundation’s daily operations, ensuring that the board’s vision translates into tangible outcomes. With the shipping sector responsible for about 90% of global trade, the Foundation’s first programs will soon launch, inviting collaboration to secure a sustainable future for global shipping amidst looming labor shortages and skills gaps.
