Massterly, the autonomous shipping venture formed by Kongsberg Maritime and Wilhelmsen, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully supervising three vessels simultaneously from its Remote Operations Centre (ROC). This advancement follows the launch of their Chief-to-Shore (C2S) project in November 2024 and internal testing completed in February 2026. On the trial’s first day, ROC Technician Kenneth Vestly managed operations for the Yara Birkeland and ASKO vessels Marit and Therese from a land-based facility.
Frikk Sandvik, the project coordinator, emphasized that while technology plays a crucial role, the main challenge lies in altering operational procedures and fostering trust between the teams at sea and onshore. “I thought this would be all about technology. But the real work is changing mindsets, procedures, and how sea and shore teams trust each other,” he noted.
The ROC simulates a ship’s bridge environment, equipped with alarms, camera feeds, and General Arrangement (GA) drawings, complemented by visualizations and dashboards developed with Kongsberg Maritime. Captain Ted Fredheim and Navigator Jannicke Wilskow monitored the trial aboard the Therese, with Vestly highlighting the importance of crew dialogue in making remote operations effective.
Previously, the project received approval for a single vessel’s shore-based operation in July 2025, later expanding to two vessels per operator by October 2025. Moving forward, the C2S project aims to enhance oversight tools, including fleet-level monitoring and simplified vessel dashboards featuring ‘traffic light’ systems for data aggregation.
