MISC Berhad has pledged RM40 million to support the development of Malaysia’s future maritime leaders through its MISC Education Sponsorship program. This initiative will aid 153 students over the next 3.5 years, enabling them to pursue maritime studies at Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM). With this latest funding, MISC has now supported a total of 776 cadets, reinforcing its essential role in nurturing the country’s maritime talent pipeline.

The sponsorship encompasses tuition fees, training, and living expenses, allowing cadets to enroll in specialized diploma programs in Nautical Studies, Marine Engineering, and the newly introduced Marine Electro-Technology course. Zahid Osman, MISC’s President and Group CEO, emphasized the company’s belief in education as a transformative force, stating that the sponsorship is an investment in human potential rather than mere financial assistance.

MISC’s commitment to maritime education dates back to 1977 when it became a founding member of the Malaysian Training and Education for Seamen (MATES). Since then, over 15,000 maritime professionals have been trained at ALAM, many of whom occupy senior roles both at sea and onshore, both locally and internationally. The company has solidified its position as a key player in maritime talent development in Malaysia.

In addition to its educational initiatives, ALAM has a strong track record of promoting gender inclusivity, having welcomed its first female cadets in 2006. MISC continues to advocate for opportunities for women in the maritime sector, aligning with its broader commitment to fostering a diverse and progressive workforce. The announcement was celebrated during ALAM’s 124th Convocation, attended by notable figures including Datuk Abu Huraira Abu Yazid and YB Tuan Loke Siew Fook.
