The Maritime Technologies Forum (MTF) has released new guidelines to enhance the safety of ships utilizing wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) as the shipping industry shifts towards technologies aimed at reducing fuel consumption and emissions. These guidelines offer recommendations for developing safety management systems specifically for vessels equipped with various WAPS, including rotor sails and wing sails.
The report emphasizes addressing operational, technical, and organizational challenges linked to WAPS, such as maneuverability, visibility, maintenance, and emergency preparedness. It aims to help companies identify procedural gaps and strengthen safety frameworks for both new and retrofitted vessels.
Additionally, the guidelines stress the importance of structured risk assessments and the continuous monitoring of WAPS-related incidents to improve operational performance. Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, Interim CEO Maritime at DNV, highlighted that safety must remain a priority amid the industry’s decarbonization efforts.
The MTF’s guidance seeks to facilitate the safe integration of wind-assisted propulsion as regulatory frameworks and technologies evolve, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to a sustainable future. Lars Lippuner from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency noted that these guidelines provide practical recommendations for managing the complexities of WAPS within safety management systems.
