Japanese shipping firm Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has partnered with Hitachi and Hitachi Systems to establish a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at creating a floating data center (FDC) from a repurposed vessel. This collaboration marks a significant step towards innovative data solutions in maritime environments.
Under the terms of the MOU, the three companies will engage in various preparatory activities, including demand verification and the assessment of fundamental specifications and operational protocols. They will also conduct feasibility studies to evaluate the commercial viability of the FDC, with plans to initiate operations by 2027 or later.
The project will primarily target Japan, leveraging the Hitachi Group’s existing experience in land-based data centers. Additionally, the initiative will extend to Malaysia and the United States, where there is a solid track record of successful land-based data center services, ensuring a broad market approach for the floating data center concept.
This venture reflects a growing trend toward innovative data management solutions, combining maritime logistics with advanced technology to meet increasing data demands across various regions.
