The Netherlands has called on the European Union to officially classify Yemen’s Houthi movement as a terrorist organization. This request follows the Houthis’ claim of responsibility for an attack on the Dutch-flagged cargo ship, Minervagracht, in the Gulf of Aden.

Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel emphasized that the Houthis pose a continuous threat to maritime safety. He noted that these recent attacks are purportedly carried out in solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza.

If the EU decides to designate the Houthis as terrorists, it could lead to economic sanctions against the group, aligning with the positions of countries like the USA and Canada. The Houthis have recently targeted vessels associated with Israel, and the assault on the Minervagracht resulted in injuries to crew members and required an evacuation.
