The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and Seatrium have inaugurated an Offshore & Marine Digital Learning Lab at SIT’s Punggol Campus to enhance maritime digitalization and support energy transition efforts. This initiative stems from a 2024 memorandum of understanding and is backed by financial investments from Seatrium. The lab serves as a collaborative platform for applied learning, workforce development, and industry-led innovation in shipyard and offshore operations.
Over the next three years, the facility aims to assist over 700 undergraduates and provide training for more than 1,000 continuing education learners in the offshore and marine sector. It will emphasize advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital twin systems, and smart microgrid applications, focusing on enhancing energy efficiency and enabling AI-driven remote operations.
Key research themes include sustainability through microgrid digital twins and 5G-enabled maritime applications. Target metrics aim to boost the adoption of greener technologies by 10% and enhance operational accuracy by 20%. The lab’s integrated approach combines training and research, fostering talent development from undergraduates to industry professionals.
SIT President Chua Kee Chaing emphasized that this partnership equips learners with future-ready skills, while Seatrium CEO Chris Ong highlighted the lab’s role in leveraging global expertise to ensure sector competitiveness amid a changing energy landscape.
