The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management has introduced a new subsidy program under the Maritime Master Plan to assist local companies and organizations in developing sustainable maritime technologies. Announced on February 20 in the Government Gazette, this initiative focuses on around 30 demonstration vessels powered by hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, bio-ethanol, or those equipped with CO₂ capture systems on LNG or methanol ships.

This subsidy, part of a larger €210 million fund from the National Growth Fund, allocates €33.6 million specifically for projects that might otherwise struggle financially. The initiative is spearheaded by Dutch Maritime Land (NML) in partnership with the Ministry and RVO, aiming to establish the Netherlands as a frontrunner in maritime innovation and sustainability.

The funding provides an opportunity for companies to adopt innovative solutions that minimize environmental impact, enhance efficiency, and reduce operational costs. As global demand for sustainable shipping rises, this program seeks to expedite the energy transition and promote progressive maritime practices.

Bas Buchner, Chairman of Dutch Maritime Land, emphasized that stimulating innovation in sustainability will bolster the Netherlands’ competitive edge and contribute to a resilient maritime industry, paving the way toward a zero-emission future.
