Enagás, the Spanish gas pipeline and terminal operator, alongside Axpo, Switzerland’s leading energy producer, has launched a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel named Alisios LNG at the port of Huelva, Spain. The unveiling was conducted by Enagás CEO Arturo Gonzalo and Axpo Iberia Managing Director Ignacio Soneira. This vessel, owned by Enagás through its Scale Green Energy subsidiary and chartered by Axpo, aims to enhance the use of LNG and bio-LNG as transitional fuels for maritime transport along the Iberian Peninsula’s southern coast.

Gonzalo emphasized that the launch represents a significant step in developing infrastructure that aids the maritime sector’s decarbonization. The 12,500-cubic-meter capacity vessel is designed to support the transition towards more sustainable fuels, contributing to European emission reduction goals. The Alisios LNG utilizes advanced technology to minimize emissions during operations, positioning it as a vital asset in the ongoing energy transition.

Soneira noted that commissioning this vessel reinforces Axpo’s leadership in small-scale LNG bunkering, essential for decarbonizing maritime transport. With new European regulations influencing emissions, the Alisios LNG is expected to meet the rising demand for alternative fuels. The use of LNG is projected to reduce CO2 emissions in Spain significantly, equating to removing over a million internal combustion vehicles from the roads by 2030.
