Heritage Malta has introduced a new program for senior citizens, funded by the European Union, to delve into Malta’s maritime history and learn about current environmental challenges at the Malta Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa. The initiative, titled ‘Clean Oceans and Mapping Our Seas,’ encourages seniors to engage in discussions at the museum’s exhibition, which highlights environmental issues threatening Malta’s maritime heritage. This display is part of the larger exhibition ‘An Island at the Crossroads,’ offering a comprehensive exploration of Malta’s maritime history from ancient explorers to modern-day immigration by sea.
The exhibition at the Malta Maritime Museum also features an immersive experience that simulates the depths of a Malta Drydocks dock. The ‘Clean Oceans and Mapping Our Seas’ program is designed to provide a tailored and engaging experience for senior participants, with sessions scheduled to begin soon and run until March. Participants can choose from two time slots on weekdays and may have the option of weekend sessions based on interest. Free transportation will be provided for all participants, and the museum is fully accessible for those with mobility needs.
This initiative is the result of a collaboration between Heritage Malta and Norway’s Stavanger Maritime Museum, funded by the EEA and Norway Grants 2014-2021. The partnership aims to preserve Malta’s maritime heritage while addressing the escalating threats of pollution and climate change. Stakeholders involved in elderly care and social development are encouraged to reach out to Heritage Malta for more information on the program.
