New Zealand High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, David Gregory Pine, visited Hambantota International Port (HIP) on August 11, 2025, accompanied by Policy Adviser Rasika Sumudhu Jayasinghe. The visit aimed to familiarize them with the port’s development and its growing significance on the international stage.
During the tour, the delegation explored HIP’s advanced facilities and learned about its various operations, including container handling, bulk cargo services, RORO, and energy logistics. The visit fostered discussions on international collaboration and highlighted HIP as an emerging logistics hub for regional and global partners.
Strategically located just 10 nautical miles from the busy East-West shipping lane, HIP is increasingly recognized as a vital player in the Indian Ocean maritime corridor. The port has reported impressive growth across multiple sectors over the past year, enhancing its role in facilitating trade not only for Sri Lanka but for the broader region.
High Commissioner Pine’s visit underscores the rising global interest in HIP and signals opportunities for deeper engagement between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in trade, logistics, and investment.
