The Nigerian Federal Government is actively seeking support for its bid to join the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council, emphasizing the strategic importance of its ports as key trade hubs in Central and West Africa. Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, highlighted this initiative during the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly, underscoring Nigeria’s election to the IMO Council Category-C as crucial for maintaining global maritime engagement.
Oyetola articulated that Nigeria’s candidacy represents a commitment to international collaboration, referencing the successful Deep Blue Project led by NIMASA, which has significantly enhanced maritime security. He noted Nigeria’s impressive record of three consecutive years without piracy incidents, which has bolstered confidence among global shipping stakeholders and confirmed Nigeria’s role as a guarantor of maritime safety.
The Minister further explained that Nigeria’s campaign for an IMO Council seat is rooted in reciprocity and solidarity with other member states. He emphasized the importance of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly in sharing technical expertise with developing nations in Africa. Oyetola reaffirmed Nigeria’s vision for an inclusive and forward-looking IMO, pledging to be a reliable partner and leader in regional maritime governance.
In addition to its bid, Nigeria is committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, focusing on ocean conservation and marine resources. Oyetola mentioned the country’s efforts to ratify key IMO conventions and its active participation in global biodiversity agreements, showcasing Nigeria’s dedication to maritime development and regional leadership in Africa.
