Nigeria’s Blue Economy Development Gains Momentum with NASS Backing

The National Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to establishing a legal and oversight framework that promotes the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s marine and blue economy. Senator Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni, chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, highlighted this pledge during the 2025 World Maritime Day celebrations in Lagos, where the theme was “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.” He emphasized that the National Assembly will continue to pass progressive legislation and maintain robust oversight to maximize opportunities within the maritime sector.

Senator Eshinlokun-Sanni praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its steadfast dedication to advancing the maritime industry, viewing it as essential for economic diversification and national prosperity. He noted various initiatives, including port reforms and blue economy policies, which aim to enhance safety and efficiency in the sector. Furthermore, he commended the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for its efforts to elevate Nigeria’s global maritime standing and extended best wishes for its upcoming election to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Khadija Waziri-Bukar, chair of the House Committee on Maritime Safety, Education, and Administration, underscored the ocean’s vital role in global commerce, with over 80% of world trade transported by sea. She acknowledged Nigeria’s potential as a maritime hub in Africa, emphasizing the importance of protecting the nation’s waters for fisheries, energy, and biodiversity. Waziri-Bukar called for a commitment to maritime safety, urging stronger measures against piracy and pollution, while also advocating for environmental stewardship through greener shipping practices. She reiterated the House Committee’s readiness to support President Tinubu’s initiatives with robust legislation.
