The University of Strathclyde has launched the Oldendorff Research Centre for Sustainable Shipping in Glasgow, in collaboration with Oldendorff Carriers. Officially established in June 2025, the Centre aims to facilitate research that supports the decarbonisation of maritime operations, aligning industry practices with global climate goals.

Focusing on critical evidence gaps, the Centre will explore technological, operational, and human factors, including the effects of decarbonisation on crew welfare. Key research areas will include the design of energy-efficient vessels, alternative fuel integration, and AI-driven decision-support systems.

Professor Stephen McArthur, Executive Dean of Engineering, emphasized the importance of collaboration in tackling the urgent challenge of decarbonising global shipping. Dr. Torsten Barenthin, Director of Research & Development at Oldendorff, highlighted the need for open discussions on complex issues that remain largely unaddressed in current debates.

This partnership, initially announced in September 2024, aims to enhance the scientific foundation for effective maritime policymaking. A forthcoming research paper on the “Round-trip Efficiency of Various E-fuels” is part of the Centre’s initiatives to support sustainable practices in the shipping industry.
