In a significant move to boost Oman’s maritime sector, H E Dr Laila bint Ahmed al Najjar, Minister of Social Development, has issued Ministerial Decision No 80/2025 to establish the Oman Maritime Association. The decision, issued on February 19, 2025, aims to enhance collaboration, develop expertise, and promote sustainable growth within the industry. The association will work closely with government agencies, offering advisory services to stakeholders and focusing on increasing youth participation for long-term sector development.
The Oman Maritime Association will undertake various initiatives, including promoting specialized training, professional development, and industry awareness. It plans to support young Omanis in entering the maritime sector to cultivate future leadership in the field. A governing board comprising five to 12 members will oversee operations, with members elected for two-year terms, renewable for up to two consecutive terms before a mandatory break. Funding for the association will be sourced from member subscriptions, event revenues, and approved donations.
Industry experts have welcomed the establishment of the Oman Maritime Association, citing it as a milestone for the country’s maritime sector. Nasser al Hosni, an economic analyst, highlighted the partnership between government bodies and private stakeholders, which will facilitate the exchange of expertise, provide more training opportunities, and enhance policies supporting sustainable growth. Additionally, fostering youth involvement is expected to drive innovation and resilience in the industry, bolstering Oman’s maritime workforce for the future.
Maritime expert Khalid al Amri expressed his support for the association, emphasizing its importance for Omani youth and the wider maritime community. He noted that the association will offer essential support through training programs and more effective policies to safeguard livelihoods related to maritime activities. Amri also looks forward to initiatives focused on improving environmental preservation and safety standards at sea, highlighting the positive impact the association is expected to have on the industry.
