The RMT maritime union is set to initiate industrial action on Orkney Ferries later this month, driven by disputes over pay and working conditions. Starting Thursday, August 28, RMT members will refuse to work overtime until further notice, following the company’s failure to engage in meaningful negotiations regarding the 2025 pay settlement.
As the largest trade union for Orkney Ferries employees, RMT has repeatedly voiced concerns about inadequate pay, poor working conditions, and a lack of management engagement. RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey emphasized that the workers, who provide essential services to island communities, deserve fair compensation.
Dempsey criticized the company for not taking the union’s concerns seriously, which has left members with no choice but to take industrial action. He warned that this situation is avoidable but will likely disrupt services due to already insufficient staffing levels.
The union is urging management to enter constructive discussions to reach a fair resolution and prevent further escalation of the dispute.
