On March 11, the Philippine Coast Guard responded to a capsized cargo ship incident in Cebu province, successfully rescuing the crew but reporting the tragic death of a dockworker. The vessel, named Theresa I, was docked at APO Cement Port in Naga City and was involved in a loading operation that included a de-ballasting procedure. During this process, the ship lost stability and rolled over, causing its cargo to shift and ultimately leading to the capsizing.
As the ship overturned, a mooring line snapped and struck a dockworker from the cement plant. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the worker was pronounced dead. The Coast Guard reported that there were 19 crew members on board at the time of the incident. Upon arrival, they heard sounds from the vessel and discovered one engineer trapped in the engine room, who was subsequently rescued and received medical attention.
All other crew members were accounted for and reported to be in good condition. In response to the incident, the Coast Guard deployed 100 meters of oil spill boom around the vessel to monitor for potential leaks. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the capsizing is currently underway.
